LASD Museum Trip

On November 12, 2011, members from the San Bernardino Sheriff's Historical Society visited the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Museum in Whittier. The museum had just about everything you could imagine pertaining to the Department's history including vehicles (including a motorcycle), helicopters, weapons, badges and patches, signs, photographs, uniforms, and everything else. Retired LASD Lt. Judi Carlson, the museum's director, showed us around and was very helpful sharing information and ideas with us The museum is open weekdays and everyone is invited to visit. Included here are a few photographs.

SBSHS Treasurer Linda Long, LASD museum's Judi Carlson and SBSHS Secretary Juanita Jaronski enjoyed chatting and sharing information.

Updates From Our Open House

San Bernardino Sheriff Historical Society members: President Thad Riley, Research Specialist David DeSoucy, Archivist Jim Munding, Member Larry Archer and Secretary Juanita Jaronski greeted department members and guests at the first Open House held at Sheriff's Headquarters on June 28th, 2011. The purpose of the open house was to make employees and guests aware of the Department's rich and interesting history and encourage them to donate items of historical interest to the Society.
Sheriff Rod Hoops visited with Stater Bros. Chairman Jack H. Brown. The Brown family has a significant history with the Department and he brought a display of items featuring his father Jack H. Brown, Sr. who was Sheriff Walter Shay's chief investigator in the 1920s. Jack Brown. Sr. was recruited in 1928 by Riverside County Sheriff Sweeters to help bring a serial child murderer to justice. These murders were the subject of Clint Eastwood's movie the "Changeling"
Deputy Chief Sheree Stewart was thanked by Society Secretary Juanita Jaronski for donating a 1978 poster recruiting women into law enforcement. It is the goal of the Historical Society to have a permanent home for these items so everyone can see and enjoy them.
Two retirees, Asst. Sheriff Chuck Follett and Capt. Bob Bailes had a great time looking through the history that was displayed. More events like this will be scheduled in the future.
